A WooCommerce store in Malaysia lives or dies at checkout. If your customers cannot pay the way they are used to, usually FPX online banking, an e-wallet or a card, they leave. The payment gateway is what connects your store to those payment methods, and choosing it is one of the first decisions when you build a store.

The short answer

Pick a gateway that supports FPX (most Malaysian shoppers pay this way), the e-wallets your customers use, and cards, with a well-maintained WooCommerce plugin. Then compare fees, settlement time and support. Many stores start with one Malaysian gateway for FPX and e-wallets, and add a second for international cards if they sell overseas.

Payment methods Malaysian shoppers expect

  • FPX online banking: the customer pays straight from their bank account through their online banking login. It is the payment method most Malaysian online shoppers know.
  • E-wallets and DuitNow QR: such as Touch 'n Go eWallet, GrabPay, ShopeePay and Boost. Support varies from gateway to gateway, so check which ones each gateway offers.
  • Credit and debit cards: essential if you sell to tourists or overseas customers.
  • Instalments and Buy Now Pay Later: useful for higher-priced items such as electronics and furniture.

A note on Stripe: according to Stripe's own documentation, FPX is available to Malaysian Stripe accounts, FPX payouts take about five business days, and FPX cannot be used for recurring payments. Stripe is a good choice for cards and international sales; check whether its FPX setup suits you.

What to compare before choosing

  1. Payment methods: FPX, the e-wallets your customers use, cards, and instalments if you need them.
  2. Fees: some charge a flat fee per FPX payment, others a percentage, and some add a setup or annual fee. Work out the cost at your real average order value, not the headline rate.
  3. Settlement time: how many days until the money reaches your bank account. This matters for cash flow.
  4. The WooCommerce plugin: is it official, recently updated, and compatible with your WooCommerce version? An abandoned plugin is a security and checkout risk.
  5. Requirements: most gateways need an SSM-registered business and a business bank account, and some accept sole proprietors only with extra documents.
  6. Recurring payments: if you sell subscriptions or memberships, check that the gateway supports them with WooCommerce.
  7. Support: when a payment fails on a busy sales day, can you reach someone quickly?

How to set up a payment gateway in WooCommerce

  1. Apply for a merchant account with the gateway and wait for approval. Have your SSM documents and bank details ready.
  2. Install the gateway's WooCommerce plugin from the WordPress plugin directory or the provider's website.
  3. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, enable the gateway and paste in the API keys from your merchant dashboard.
  4. Set your store currency to Malaysian Ringgit (MYR).
  5. Test in sandbox mode first, then make a real, small payment and refund it to check the whole flow.
  6. Confirm that paid orders change to Processing automatically and that order emails are sent.

Common problems and how to avoid them

  • Orders stuck on "Pending payment" after the customer paid. The gateway could not reach your store's callback URL to confirm the payment. Security plugins, firewalls and caching are common causes; exclude the callback URL from them.
  • Checkout breaks after an update. Test checkout after every WooCommerce or plugin update. Our WordPress maintenance checklist includes this.
  • Too many payment options. Showing every method on one long list slows customers down. Offer the methods your customers actually use.
